It crashes both randomly and predictably. Today there still isn't a very good selection of multimedia-capable units, unless you go way higher in price. It probably crashes about once a week for me. If you cross a time zone - crash. I would not recomment this to anyone looking for a new unit.I look past this shortcoming because of the unit's multimedia capabilities.
I never had a problem with strange routing like some people have mentioned, and any other quirks or "problems" are pretty easy to ignore, except for one:The biggest problem that I have experienced with this unit is that its software crashes pretty regularly. If you look at it the wrong way - crash. It doesn't happen a lot, but enough to get annoying. When I bought it 2 years ago for $230 (that price was normal for this unit back then), it was by far the cheapest GPS unit that could play mp3s and movies, and with a 480x800 resolution. I have owned this unit for 2 year now, and I like practically every aspect of this GPS unit (all the good things that everyone else has mentioned).
If it is too cold (e.g., in the morning) - crash. This is the reason for the lower rating.
For example, the hardware is great. Also, if a normal person could use it without a user's manual.What else. And the [.]. it it did not reboot every once in a while.
If not, look elsewhere. There is a SD card slot, and you can use it to load your own software. Screen resolution is very good, the screen is very bright and the processor is fast. I paid $180, and I think that's exactly what it is worth. No more and no less.Apparently HP decided to make the best GPS possible and then gave up for some reason. The software could be great. Oh, the maps are not exactly up-to-date.
For example, if you happen to fly gliders, there is a version of xcsoar for IPAQ 310.In short: if you can find one for a good price, are a geek and like fiddling with stuff - buy it. I bought mine directly from HP. But there are those tiny, annoying things, like "power" button that WILL get accidentally pressed even if you keep the device in its carrying case. site is not there anymore.Now, did I mention that the hardware is really great.
Also, this is a very user "unfriendly" device. Spend time reading the manual and learning how to operate it and you will be pleased, but this is not a plug and play device so if you are technically challenged this is not the device for you. Is a real shame that HP left everyone in the cold as this is a very powerful unit with lots of potential. from the navigation software manufacturer. They have pretty much fixed most of the problems with the units but forget them for maps updates. HP has abandoned users and there will be no more updates. Thankfully, map updates are available [.]. I updated the maps and also added speed/safety cams software which does not come with the unit in the US.
It does crash some time as you can expect it from a Windows operating system. Sound - I have attached a small speaker. For the 1st GPS from HP it does a great job. It looks very stylish and have a great picture quaility.
The iPAQ 310 is an excellent machine but, perhaps due to its very high image quality - resolution and colour definition - the load on the processor is also very high and the result is that the speed of the device is not so brilliant. Nevertheless I am happy with the acquisition.
